Where We Are Now with Bionics

Hugh Herr TED Talk The New Bionics 3-28-2014

I came across this amazing TEDTalks presentation by Hugh Herr, head of the MIT Media Lab’s Biomechatronics group, demonstrating the phenomenal current technology of bionic prosthetic limbs. Herr, himself a double amputee, tells the stories of people who were affected by tragedy with the loss of a limb—or multiple limbs in some cases—who are able to benefit from the advancement of this technology and are able to pursue their passions and continue living their normal lives. One such individual is Adrianne Haslet-Davis, who lost her left leg in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, but is able to continue her passion of dancing with the aid of this technologically advanced bionic limb and a group of brilliant MIT scientists who made it all possible. The idea and drive behind this advancement in technology is Hugh Herr’s belief that, “…a human being is not broken. Technology is broken. Technology is inadequate.”
